The Kent Funk & Soul Family

Written by on 16th July 2018

Planet of Sound in association with The Kent DJ Academy are introducing a new club night to Maidstone. The Kent Funk & Soul Family will be a once a month event and as the name suggests, it will feature the best in funk & soul with the onus on it feeling like a family. We are talking to venue owners now to find the best place to host out party. We will also be supporting it with a weekly radio show/podcast so you will never miss out on your Friday funky feeling.

We want to capture the spirit and essence of the soul weekender and bring it to you every month in Maidstone. We want you to experience the joyful celebration of a funk & soul party that you feel part of. The music we play is timeless, it appeals to all generations, and we can confidently say there will be no other club night like it in Maidstone. Our record box is deep and it is expansive, you will hear tunes you never knew existed, that will become new anthems for you. We will be playing music from all decades, from the early days of funk, the halcyon days of the 70’s & 80’s, through the hedonistic 90’s, right up to the present day.

Join our family and belong to something special.

So what do we play? This isn’t going to be some cheesy soul night playing Gloria Gaynor! We will be playing anything from 60’s to present day. If it funks, if it moves your feet as much as your soul, we will be playing it. We embrace the emergence of nu-disco, classic beats and melodies brought bang up to date with new production techniques and pin-sharp sound quality. A good example of this is record label Glitterbox, and we want to bring you the euphoria of a Glitterbox show to you in Kent.

Our influences are demonstrated by DJ/Producers, Joey Negro, Norman Jay MBE, Dimitri from Paris and Purple Disco Machine. All have an unerring ability to pick up on lost tunes and rare grooves and bring them to life with panache and style.

Nu-Skool v Old-Skool?

We’re sitting on the fence, some things cannot be improved on – and then someone comes along and proves us wrong. What is certain, one cannot live without the other, so we will be featuring a lot of old skool stuff. Here’s a trip through the decades to show you what you could find on our setlist.

Sly & The Family Stone – Everyday People – 1969

The Jackson Sisters – I Believe In Miracles – 1973

TS Monk – Candidate For Love – 1980

Masters At Work Feat. India – To Be In Love – 1999

Kings of Tomorrow – Finally – 2001

Shuya Okino – Give You Love A Chance – 2013

Alex Virgo – Ze Dance – today 2018
